GUIDELINES FOR THE 2009 RICHARD B. HARWELL BOOK AWARD

The Civil War Round Table of Atlanta is now accepting nominations for the 21st awarding of the Richard B. Harwell Book Award. This annual prize “for the best book on a Civil War subject published in the preceding year”, honors the high standards of Civil War historiography set by Richard Harwell. Books to be considered for this year’s award must have been published in 2008.

While any book on the subject of the Civil War published in the appropriate year may qualify for consideration, entries are judged by the Harwell Committee on a variety factors. Some of these factors include: originality of subject or treatment; historical accuracy; effectiveness of presentation; and the degree of original contribution to Civil War literature. Additional factors such as first time authors, western theater topics, etc. may also be considered.

NOMINATION SOURCES: Nominations for the Harwell Award may come from publishers, authors, or members of the CWRT of Atlanta. Additional nominations may be made by members of the Harwell Committee.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: To be considered for this year’s award, all nominations and copies of books from publishers or authors, must be received by the CWRT of Atlanta by November 15, 2008.

SELECTION DATE: The Harwell Book Award Committee will make its selection by February 15, 2009. The winning author will be scheduled to appear as a speaker before the CWRT of Atlanta (usually at the November meeting) to receive the award.

Publishers and authors are welcome to submit more than one work for consideration.

CWRT of Atlanta Members -- Submit, in writing, the name of the author, title of the book and a short statement of why you recommend the book, to any member of the Harwell
Book Award Committee or the Executive Board.
